Diabetic retinopathy
Diabetes can damage and close the retina’s smallest blood vessels. Early disease may have no symptoms; later stages can cause leakage, macular swelling, abnormal new vessels, bleeding or traction on the retina.
Care may include closer monitoring, control of diabetes and blood pressure, OCT imaging, intravitreal injections, retinal laser or vitreoretinal surgical referral depending on the stage.
