Start with positioning and attachment
Comfortable positioning brings the baby close and well supported, while a deep attachment helps milk transfer and reduces nipple trauma. Persistent pain throughout a feed is a reason to reassess rather than simply endure it.
A lactation consultation can observe a feed, check swallowing and output, review breast and nipple concerns and help the family recognise feeding cues.
- Observe a complete feed where possible
- Adjust position before blaming supply
- Review weight gain, wet nappies and stools alongside feeding
